The Evolution of Blockchain Games
Blockchain gaming has been the hottest topic in the last half year. In this weekly insight, I will briefly talk about the Evolution of Blockchain Games.
The representatives of first generation blockchain gaming projects are Crypto Kitties and EOS Knight. Earlier gaming projects usually have passive game experience, relying on time-based actions that result in the collection of resources over time.
Now we are at the 2nd stage of blockchain gaming — where gaming projects create a digital economy and incentivize the players/users with the help of a new element called “Play-to-Earn”, which also can be considered as “proof of play”. Users/players earn protocol tokens through playing the games. The tokens earned can be traded on exchanges, used in-game, or cashed out via fiat gateway. The most notable project is Axie Infinity, and there are four main aspects to Axie’s success:
1. crypto & blockchain technology are becoming mainstream
2. “P2E” has increased the player engagement
3. Global pandemic leads to the rise of unemployment
4. Axie Infinity works on both Android & IOS, bigger target group
However, the 2nd generation games still lack gameplay, user experience and graphic designs compared to traditional games, and this prevents blockchain games from mainstreaming.
Now we know the 3rd generation of blockchain games will come with better game experience and graphic design with the element of “Play-to-Earn”. Axie opened the era of blockchain gaming, and the 3rd gen games will bring in large gaming communities and push blockchain games to the mainstream. This will also push the pace of traditional gaming giants such as Nexon (Already in), Ubisoft (already in), EA, SEGA (already in) and Playstation entering the blockchain fields to build their own gaming projects, which can be expected as the 4th generation of blockchain games. But the current case of the 3rd generation blockchain games has not yet landed. Some notable projects we can look at are: Star Atlas, Ember Sword, Eizperchain, Project SEED, Cryowar, Big Time and Mirandus.
